It’s no secret that we’re swirling in a whirlwind of bullshit. He Who Shall Not Be Named, also known as the Republican frontrunner of the 2016 presidential election, has dominated headlines in large part due to his petulant childish behavior and inability to take responsibility for his volatile rhetoric. In the past week alone we’ve seen acts of violence break out during campaign rallies – an unsettling turn of events for our country’s most coveted governmental belief – democracy rules. We never could’ve imagined that Mr. Drumpf and America at large would take it this far.
Yes, there’s a bunch of fly-infested shit dirtying up the political process, bigoted beliefs are finding big platforms thanks to sensationalism, and we’ve got a ways to go before the storm clears and sanity reigns supreme once again. But despite the uphill battle we face, there’s always avenues of positivity and inspiration to be found that will uplift us and encourage us to embrace the suck and keep it moving.
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson – a man that needs no introduction – but one I don’t mind giving just because it’s that fucking badass. From collegiate football star (a victorious national championship with the Miami Hurricanes) to WWE superstar (17 championship reigns) and now Hollywood megastar (highest-grossing actor), Dwayne Johnson has simply dominated every facet of pop culture. With his sheer size and undeniably electric charisma, it’s easy for some to imagine that flourishing comes easy for The Rock. We see his name in bright lights, he shines on red carpet premieres and in the middle of the ring, and he lands more deals in a year than some do in their entire life. It’s astonishing.
But no, the life did not fall in The Rock’s lap. If you follow The Great One on Instagram, he’s openly shared his ongoing journey to millions of fans (46 to be exact), a journey that consists of 4 AM wake-up calls, Spartan-status workouts, an unrivaled filming schedule, and most importantly, a journey where Dwayne shines light on his fans and on those who face greater challenges than him.
You see, when it comes to his fans, The Rock is an open book. As a bona fide Hollywood heavyweight, The Rock stunts with his opulent lifestyle, one that includes his own personal heaven/gym the Iron Paradise, his adorable Frenchie Hobbs, and plenty of photos of exotic locations and private jets. But as much as he shares photos of his hard-earned wins, he shares just as many true stories about real people. People that admire his success and look to him as inspiration while facing life’s overwhelming challenges. The Rock goes in depth about the fans he meets, sharing photos of their interactions and how they’ve impacted his life. By doing this, he’s bringing awareness to illnesses, hardships, and shortcomings that many of us overlook, not because we don’t care, but because life moves fast and sometimes it’s hard to stop and take a closer look.
I admire what The Rock does. There are celebrities that choose to move in silence, helping those in need behind closed doors. And that’s a totally viable and justified way of giving back. Hell, in some ways it’s the best way to go about it. Shutting down the cameras, avoiding the headlines, and placing importance on the act instead of the notoriety to genuinely help those in need. We know that’s how The Carters like to move. But there’s also a lot of value in what The Rock does. Every time he visits a sick child in the hospital, or gives to someone in need, he takes time to tell their story, creating miniature heroes across the nation. He gives them a moment they’ll never forget and for us mindlessly scrolling on Instagram, he forces us to pause and be thankful for our blessings and to pray for those who face inexplicable hardships.
What I particularly love about Dwayne Johnson is his unwavering ability to think of new ways to help others with every project he’s involved in. Look at young Tater for example. A brave young boy battling cancer who also happens to be a huge fan of the big bald-headed action hero. Not only did The Rock fulfill Tater’s wish, but he plans on bringing him to the set of Baywatch as a special guest to meet the rest of the cast.
I guess my point is this: with all the negativity in the world – the egos, the hatred, the ignorance – it’s easy to get lost in the storm. But there are folks like The Rock who genuinely work tirelessly to make this world a better place – one smile at a time. When you’re tired of reading about Drumpf making American great again, follow The Rock, a guy who started from the bottom and now truly helps those while commanding at the top.
Tater! Guess what buddy? I’m coming to meet you!! I want you to be my special guest on our #BAYWATCH set in Savannah, GA. Everyone on set is excited to meet you… especially the pretty girls! Uh oh😉👊🏾. Tater, not only am I super pumped to meet you, but I’m a big bald headed LUCKY DUDE to meet you as well. When I surprised Maleak at the Pediatric Specialty Ward in Savannah, he ran into my arms and gave me a huge hug. Now I’m not just talkin’ about any kind of hug… this boy gave me a BEAR HUG. He’s already stronger than I’ll ever be, but physically he gave me the hug of all hugs. Trust me, I’m a hugger so I know. 😂 So good to spend some time with Maleak and his mama. Talked about everything from my movies, wrestling to how important it is that he eat all of his food. Let’s get that appetite up buddy. I say it often and its true. I’m a lucky lucky dude to be able to do what I do and reactions and meetings like this one with Maleak will always be the best part of fame. You stay strong big man. Keep that smile on your face, keep giving out those bear hugs and make sure you’re eatin’ all your food! All of it;) 💯👊🏾💪🏾 Your bud ~ DJ

So I called an audible and went to visit Christopher. Glad we did… While I was visiting the Pediatric Specialty Ward surprising the kids, I got word from my team that there was a mom who was pleading with our production staff, that I go upstairs to her son’s room to give him a much needed big surprise. Since he’s older he’s in the main hospital and not in pediatric care. We were shooting #BAYWATCH scenes outside of the hospital, but instead of heading back to shoot I called the audible, put production on hold and went upstairs to see this young man. I walked in and his smile lit up the room! And I mean lit that room up!;) We talked for a while about his family, his school and how hard he’s working to eventually graduate AND we talked about how COOL all his scars are from his multiple surgeries – from his head to his chest – those scars are badges of honor and the reminder of how beyond tough this kid is. Right before I left his mom looked at him and said, “Christopher I can’t give you anything, but I’m so happy I could give you this today…” and she started to breakdown, which was captured in this pic. Made me think to give so much credit to these parents who would do anything to take their kid’s pain away and ANYTHING to bring a smile to their faces. As a papa bear I understand. Glad this mom brought a smile to Christopher’s face. And glad I got a chance to shake the hand of this very strong and inspiring young man. Stay strong Christopher and show them scars with pride. You’re the man! ~ DJ

#1 thing people ask me about is this story about these awesome girls. All ages and races – lucky dude to have the greatest fans in the world. #Repost ・・・ Maybe it’s random or maybe it’s holiday fate… either way it makes my heart sing… I decide to take a Sunday drive in my pick up to run errands and go train at my buddy’s gym. As I’m driving down the road I see three young girls holding signs that just say “Beep”, “Happy Holidays” etc. So I drive by and do what anyone would do.. I beep and wave. As I look in my rearview I can see that they’re pointing at my truck (my all black pick up is pretty recognizable in our little country town). I go train and run my errands and over 3 HOURS later I’m driving back down our little backroad and the same three angels are standing by the side of the road – only this time they’re jumping up and down, waving and screaming as I drove by. I thought, “Did those signs say my name?”…”Should I turn around just in case?” I decide to hit the brakes and look in my rearview and in that very moment I see them going BONKERS! I flipped a U-turn and drove back to them. They were elated. So was I. These little angels waited outside for over 3 hours for me to hopefully drive back down their road.. their mom and dad came running out and we all exchanged hugs and took pics. I made sure I got a pic with my phone, wished them all Happy Holidays, got back in my truck and went on my way. The coolest part of this whole random (or maybe fateful) act is that by turning around I literally got to meet some of the sweetest and kindest little ladies and family I’d ever met. May sound silly or corny, but moments like this are by far the greatest part of fame. Happy Holiday’s guys and thank you universe for this really cool moment. #CheckoutSantaWithThePhotoBomb 🎅🏾 #GreatestFansInTheWorld 👊🏾

*** I posted this story on Easter about this inspiring kid and fateful meeting. Story made national headlines and I just saw him again and have a new update on him that I’ll share w y’all later today. But first here’s the original story as a refresher. Enjoy.. ** Cool story to share on Easter.. After my workout I’m drivin’ in my pick up and notice these kids in the rearview mirror screamin’ & runnin’ after my truck. Thought to myself, “Should I stop or keep drivin’?” I stopped. I hop out of my truck and this kid runs up to me, hugs the hell outta me and says it’s been his life’s dream to meet me and tell me how much I’ve inspired him to fight cancer (Hodgkin’s lymphoma) and hard core chemo and stem cell transplant treatments. He was a little teary eyed and said for months and months all he’s wanted to do was find me and say this face to face. I told him what it meant to me to hear this story. I thanked him, hugged him (and his friends), got back in my truck and drove away. As I’m drivin’ I start shaking my head (and tearing up) at how fragile life is and how amazing and cool the universe was to make this meeting happen between myself and this special kid Nick Miller. Let’s always take a moment to count our blessings.. cause there’s always something to be grateful for. Happy Easter y’all – DJ
This Friday night a very emotional and special #WakeUpCall This beautiful family on 5 had been evicted and forced to live in a small motel room. This is the moment I walked in the room and the mom hugged me and broke down in tears. I came to help and she knew change was going to happen for her family. This episode broke my heart ’cause I’ve been there. I know what it’s like to be evicted and scared (many of you know this pain too). I also know what it’s like to put in the work and have faith that one day things will get better. From my heart it was a pleasure to help this family through their tough times. This FRIDAY night you’ll meet the inspiring Mason family. #WakeUpCall #9pm #OnTNT
