Michael Jordan has spent the majority of his career establishing himself as one of the greatest athletes of all-time. There isn’t an accolade that he hasn’t reached. There isn’t a career he hasn’t inspired. There isn’t a moment too big for “His Airness.” He’s the standard by which almost every single athlete is judged and measured up to. He’s almost an impossible mountain of a myth and man to climb for even some of the greatest athletes of our time.
However, with the rise of social media and the hyper-reporting of the Internet’s news cycle, something changed. On September 12, 2009, Michael Jordan was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. Nothing about the speech is particularly memorable, but one iconic face is. When Jordan was eventually moved to tears in the middle of his speech, little did he or anyone know that his face would become the most iconic sports meme in the history of the Internet.
The man who was synonymous with success and winning for most of his career, is now the one face that most people in 2016 relate to failure . Whether it’s a person who failed at a sporting event, failed at a political event, or failed at life, “Crying MJ” is a face of a generation…of losers.
The STASHED team teamed up with HTC and headed over to Toronto, Canada for All-Star Weekend to present our first mini-documentary, Behind The Meme: Crying MJ. We rounded up some of the greatest players in the NBA to discuss what is the greatest sports meme of all time. Check out the trailer for the upcoming mini-doc, which includes appearances from Kobe Bryant, Stephen Curry, Kristaps Porzingis, Carmelo Anthony, Jahlil Okafor, Russell Westbrook, Kawhi Leonard, Jimmy Butler, Demar Derozan, Kyle Lowry, John Wall, Kevin Durant, Dwyane Wade and Michael Jordan.
