Whether Ken Griffey Jr. is the greatest Major League Baseball player of all-time is something that can be up for debate, what can’t be argued is the man’s ability to sell a product. Nike, Pepsi, Nintendo, Kellogg’s, it didn’t matter; if it was the 90’s and Ken Griffey Jr.s face was on it, the thing was going to sell. Rivaled by only Michael Jordan, Ken Griffey Jr. was one of the most marketable athletes of the 90s.
You don’t have to look very far to see the proof of his staying power, as re-releases of his Nike signature shoes continue to be a top seller well into the next decade. Moreso, Griffey has been liable to pop up in commercials nearly a half of a decade since “The Kid” hung up his cleats.
Whether it is his boyish charm, picture-perfect swing, acrobatic diving catches, or the backwards hat, Griffey Jr. was a brand’s dream in the 90s. Off the heels of the announcement that Griffey will be a part of the 2016 class of the Major League Baseball Hall Of Fame, we decided not to marvel at his on-the-field exploits but his legacy off of it.
90’s babies rejoice and give your love for nostalgia a nice shot in the arm by running through STASHED’s collection of Junior Griffey’s finest advertising moments. Sidebar, if Junior isn’t inducted with his cap on backwards it really should be null in void.
