Kendrick Lamar’s having one of the best runs ever. To Pimp a Butterfly, K. Dot’s latest album, will reach its one-year anniversary in March, but before then, fans will be able to see the work celebrated at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards. The Compton emcee entered the New Year with 11 nominations, and an LP that’s still talked about today.
With the hype still flowing, it’s no surprise that old footage resurfaced of Kendrick Lamar. A visual uploaded by TDE in 2009 shows the rapper freestyling to Kanye West’s “So Appalled,” and it’s just as hard hitting as his music is today. “People don’t understand why I went South Paw/ I looked in the mirror and said I can’t be like y’all/ I can’t be like Game/ I can’t be like Yeezy/ To get in this rap game, I know it won’t be easy,” he raps.
Before the freestyle, Kendrick Lamar introduced viewers to the sound he was pushing at the time. “Human music. That’s what we got going on at Top Dawg Entertainment,” he told the interviewer. ” You can’t classify it as one thing or the other. If you’re a real person you’re going to relate to it.”
